Strengthening Slovak roots
in Switzerland

• we connect the community • we share values • we organize cultural events

Story

The Slovak cultural association was established as a platform alongside the Slovak school and kindergarten in Zurich and builds on a more than 55-year tradition of compatriot activities. We are a religiously and politically independent association that participates in creating projects to support the preservation of the Slovak language and culture. We are a safe environment not only for families, but also for individuals who long for a Slovak community in Switzerland. In addition to the Slovak school and kindergarten in Zurich and Lucerne, we closely cooperate with the Czech Club Zurich and the Czech school and kindergarten in Adliswil. Are you interested in Slovak culture, customs and traditions, or art as such? Do you want to spend time meaningfully in a Slovak-speaking community, co-create and help implement our events, or do you just want to support our activities? Join us—we’ll be glad.

Logo

In the logo of the Slowakischer Kulturverein, two linden seeds are used as a symbol, meant to remind us that no one in the world should ever be alone. Just like linden seeds, many Slovaks have been carried far away from their roots. The linden is Slovakia’s national tree; it is considered a symbol of national identity, freedom, and love for the homeland. This tree is associated with various traditions and the history of Slovakia, especially in connection with folk customs and legends. National symbol: The linden is the official tree of the Slovak Republic. In 1993 it was declared the national tree and to this day is considered a symbol of the nation. Historical significance: The linden is linked to many historical events. In the past, various municipal and national assemblies were often held under its branches. Symbol of peace: In Slovak folk culture, the linden is associated with peace, harmony, and hospitality. Medicinal use: The linden also has practical significance in traditional medicine. The linden is also a source of honey, which is popular for its healing properties. Symbol for Slovaks abroad: The linden has also become a symbol for Slovak communities abroad, where it is associated with national pride and cultural identity.

Projects

Culture: We organize cultural events for all age groups. We preserve Slovak art, culture, literature, music, national customs, traditions, and Slovak identity. We bring events by Slovak artists to Switzerland so that we can remember the beauty of our language and maintain warm communication with Slovakia. Every year we organize • Traditional cultural events • Spring festival • Mile for Mom • Children's Day • Barbecues • Workshops • Concerts and exhibitions • St. Nicholas • Ahoj Festival and much more.

Education: We work closely with the Slovak school in Switzerland. We support language education and creative workshops for children.

Community: We create a space for families and friends to meet. We strengthen relationships with Slovak associations and with cultural organizations of other nationalities operating in Switzerland. We provide a network for newcomers to help them settle in more easily and make friends.

Membership: Offers the opportunity to decide on the program and guest list for the following year. Each member is informed once a year about the association's finances.
